I use it 1-2 times a week in the shower on my face, just to gently slough off dead skin. Occasionally I’ll also use coconut oil straight from the jar as a deep hair conditioner / mask (you have to wash it out thoroughly with shampoo after you apply it, or your hair will be greasy the next day, but it’s great for softening & detangling). We decided that building our own 300 square foot paver patio would make much better use of the space. All of the hard work paid off and we loved our little patio for casual weekends and even for Clara’s annual party (you can read about the process of laying the patio here). We later added a privacy fence, built a rock box for Clara, planted some hydrangeas, and got some red adirondack chairs.

I can’t explain it, you just have to try it (I get the brown color). Here’s the hall bathroom when we finished (we remembered to white balance the camera this time, hence the brighter pic). First we removed the weird off-centered bar under the window, added some window trim for balance, and raised the shower curtain for some extra drama and height. Then we painted the walls, hung art, framed out the mirror, DIYed a window shade, and added some accessories (more details on those projects here). We both have other jobs these days, mostly in the writing/marketing vein that we used to work in before, but we still love to check in here when we have something fun to share… usually with as many words as possible. And that little gray charcoal bag is something I’ve mentioned on the podcast, but we love them for eliminating smells naturally. The charcoal basically absorbs extra moisture and odor through the burlap and traps it in there – then you lay them out in the sun for around an hour or so once a month and the odors bake out and they’re “recharged” to soak up more odors for another month. I have a ton of them around the house – one in each room, plus one in each shoe bin in our mudroom cabinets by the door to keep them smelling fresh.

One of our favorite views in the house is the view from the dining room, past those built-ins, into the office.
I actually keep cotton balls and ACV in the cabinet with my mugs since I do it at the same time (you don’t need to refrigerate it). You’re going for a light coat, which shouldn’t have any smell when it dries. A little goes a long way, and it seems to also help with avoiding breakouts, reducing blackheads a ton, and just generally clarifying my skin. Last step is always some of this Boy Brow stuff, which is somehow both extremely natural looking yet it makes a huge difference.

And here’s the back hallway after we added board and batten, painted the walls a soft gray color, switched out the light fixture & doorbell, and hung some inexpensive calendar art. This room was a formal living room with a dining room behind those built-ins when we first saw this house, but we converted the formal living room into an entryway/dining room by adding a huge opening on the left wall that leads into the kitchen.
Here’s how it all looked after a few years of upgrading it. As for what we did, we arranged those shelves and painted the back wall of the built-ins. We also added a giant 70″ table, some $62 patio chairs (from Target on clearance), and some homemade curtains with a fun bold print. But the biggest change by far is the eight foot opening that we added to connect the dining room and kitchen (more on that project here and here). I also love this Burt’s Bees deep pore scrub that gently exfoliates (it has those little beads in it) and leaves my skin feeling soft.
They’d be awesome for a gym bag or cabinet full of sports stuff too. Yes, these are the household cleaners we use to clean our entire house. This J. R. Watkins lemon dish soap sits on the counter by the sink for pots and pans along with this J.R. Watkins grapefruit hand soap (which we use in our bathroom and the powder room too). And here’s our dishwasher detergent, which we forgot to pull out for the picture.
